The Lab, Building 1 & Greenhouse

Project Type Science & Technology, Interiors & Workplace

Location Research Triangle Park, NC

The Lab – Building 1 was a design-build project executed by Barnhill Construction for the Research Triangle Foundation, with architectural services provided by Integrated Design. The building is a 25,000-square-foot core and shell structure designed to accommodate both laboratory and office functions in a 60/40 ratio. In collaboration with RTF’s future tenant, AgBiome, Integrated Design developed a flexible design that could be adapted to accommodate multiple tenants in the future. The Lab – Building 1 has become a prominent landmark on the campus, featuring a modern aesthetic and an adjacent research greenhouse. The building incorporates extensive open office spaces on the north side with floor-to-ceiling windows and clerestory lighting, while the south side houses eight interconnected laboratory spaces and a central equipment core.

Working off their collective expertise in research laboratory design and construction, the team developed a new signature building and an adjacent research greenhouse. The 25,000-square-foot building features open office spaces on the north side with floor-to-ceiling windows and clerestory lighting, while the south side accommodates eight interconnected laboratory spaces and a central equipment core. Building 2 at The Lab is a 5,000-square-foot research greenhouse that was completed concurrently with the new laboratory and office building.

A covered walkway connects the laboratory and office spaces to the greenhouse. The greenhouse chambers are fully climate-controlled, enabling the cultivation of diverse crops and the execution of various experiments without the risk of cross-contamination. The on-site greenhouse complements research activities conducted at university greenhouses located approximately 20 miles away. Despite challenging weather conditions, including periods of extreme heat and heavy rainfall, construction of both buildings was completed within seven months.
